We also see a clown running against the traffic, which is perhaps odd but can be dismissed as a technical glitch. The final moments of the film provide a nightmarish conclusion to this horrific tale. Sara Havel gives an interview and provides a repository of footage to the unsuspecting documentary filmmakers. Sara abruptly ends the interview by saying that she is feeling sick and is going to take a few hours’ rest in her room, numbered 2C. She also suggests that the interviewing crew should go to the location themselves to get a better picture of the house. However, the next set of events unfold rapidly and in a way that the viewer would not have anticipated.

The recovered film reels are sent to Bradley, who includes them in the documentary, depicting footage recorded by Catherine prior to and after Margaret’s death; revealing Margaret to be the masked woman. Further footage reveals Patrick joined Tully’s cult with the hope to resurrect Margaret, moving the clowns into his bedroom, keeping Margaret’s costume as a memento. Later, the cult members invade the manor, where Catherine is killed by Margaret’s ghost.
There is an “official“ scariest scene.

Still, there’s suspense to be had as Margot puzzles through vintage clues and discovers what makes Carmichael Manor an origin story for Hell House LLC. Her determination is almost powerful enough to make it seem plausible that the group would stay despite mounting red flags suggesting they should flee the property and never look back. This isn’t Amityville Horror—Margot and company haven’t invested anything but time, so they could leave at any moment, plus the freaky footage they capture early in their visit would be more than enough to bring Margot’s website zillions of clicks. You can’t help but sympathize with Rebecca when she pleads to leave before the five days are up—or later, embodying a classic found-footage horror trope, when she screams at Margot for keeping the camera rolling as the ghostly shit is hitting the fan.

They found the haunted attraction called the Haunting at the Waldorf Hotel in Lehighton, Pennsylvania, run by Angie Moyer, who served as the film's set designer. A Hell house, like a conventional haunted-house attraction, is a space set aside for actors to frighten patrons with gruesome exhibits and scenes, presented as a series of short vignettes with a narrated guide. Unlike haunted houses, Hell houses focus on real-life situations and the effects of sin or the fate of unrepentant sinners in the afterlife. A video that the film claims is uploaded on YouTube shows a tour-goer’s perspective of what went wrong at the “Hell House” on the night of its opening. Seemingly shot on a phone camera, the video begins with a queue of the audience waiting to experience the spectacle of the haunted house. During the tour, we see a bunch of props, fake spider webs, and grotesque mannequins – things one would normally expect from a spook house.

Possessed by the malevolent spirit, Tanner attempts to destroy it, thinking that it will harm the spirits in the house, but she is prevented from doing serious damage. She enters the chapel, "the unholy heart" of the house, in an attempt to warn the spirits, but she is crushed by a falling crucifix. Fischer wanders the house afterwards, attempting to sense psychic energy; in astonishment, he declares the place "completely clear!" But violent psychic activity soon resumes, and Barrett is killed. Diane asks the hotel receptionist to inform Sara that they are going out, only to find that no Sara Havel is staying at the hotel and that the hotel rooms don’t have letters assigned to them.

Stephen Cognetti drew inspiration from Lake Mungo.
Original and effective, the scene manages to be simultaneously funny and terrifying. Evil Dead is, of course, Raimi’s horror franchise going back to 1981’s same-name film starring Bruce Campbell as Ash Williams, a combatant of various supernatural entities. That pic grew into a trilogy, also spurring the creation of Starz’s Ash vs. Evil Dead and a number of other projects. The most recent, standalone film Evil Dead Rise from writer-director Lee Cronin, grossed more than $147M worldwide last year when it hit theaters via Warner Bros, after launching at SXSW.
Soon after, Diane attempts to leave a message at the hotel reception desk for Sara, but reception informs her that no one under Sara’s name is registered as a guest and there is no room 2C at that hotel. The film is presented as a documentary investigating an unexplained accident at an abandoned hotel in the town of Abaddon in Rockland County, New York that was set up as a haunted house. It is to both of the films’ credit that they only partially resemble each other.

After filming wrapped within Lehighton in May, the production then moved to New York City, where most of the interviews were filmed. In mid-June, filming was complete, and the movie went to post-production, where it would be edited for the next five months, before the first private screening of a rough cut would be seen in the Rose Studio at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. In addition to a number of award-winning shorts, like High Desert Hell and The Gemini Project, the up-and-coming genre filmmaker has previously been tapped to helm multiple music videos for the L.A.-based indie rock band Mt. Joy. Mr. Deutsch's mansion in the opening sequence is Blenheim Palace in Woodstock, Oxfordshire. While Melissa, an actress hired for the show, discloses this information to the crew, she is unable to tell whether or not Tully performed satanic rituals in the basement. At one point in the film, the audience finds a seemingly hypnotized Sara chanting a Latin hymn in the basement, which seems Satanic from the sound of it.
Another episode finds a dumbstruck Paul sitting on the basement floor following Paul’s encounter with the girl’s ghost. Joel Anderson’s Lake Mungo (2008) flew under the radar when it was initially released. But Cognetti has cited the eerie, faux-documentary from Australia—about a grieving family attempting to come to terms with their daughter’s drowning and subsequent haunting of the family home—as a major as inspiration on the Hell House LLC trilogy. Diane and her cameraman break in and see the aftermath of what unfolded that night.
The house is believed to be haunted by the victims of Belasco's twisted and sadistic desires. Valentina Kraljik is a writer and editor at Fiction Horizon with a passion for exploring the world of media. With a degree in Information Sciences, she brings a unique and informed perspective to her work.
The recovered footage was edited together by Margot’s friend Bradley Moynahan, who provides commentary alongside journalist Alicia Cavalini. The film’s narrative provides connections to previous films and the franchise’s lore involving the hotel and cult leader Andrew Tully. The film, shot as a documentary, follows a group of Halloween haunted house creators as they prepare for the 2009 opening of their popular haunted attraction Hell House. Shot in documentary style, the story of the search for answers as to what happened on a tragic and unexplainable October night in the spirit-filled Abbadon Hotel excelled in terrifying audiences with its clown-based jump scares and doom-laden, labyrinth-like setting. We see photos of a blood-stained floor clicked by photographer Martin Cliver, who broke into the scene shortly after the tragedy.
Margot’s own interest in the paranormal began after a man in a clown costume tried to abduct her at a funfair when she was a child. Margot and Rebecca are joined by Chase, who has a history of psychosis, drawn to help Margot following another episode. They find a locked storage room full of paraphernalia from the funfair, including three clown mannequins. It's only when viewers rewatch the footage after the movie’s end that they realize the full significance of these hidden scares. Doesn’t that bartender have pale-white eyes, just like many of the Abaddon Hotel’s many permanent guests?
